design is the at core of all work produced by lye, . . and a lifetime of looking and drawing informs the symbolism, composition and structure of those designs . . .

the work mirrors lye's philosophy and belief in an 'attainable state of perfection' by using geometry, 'the science of the absolute' as the foundation stone and departure point of the designs. this 'absolute' nature, whether fixed or fluid, dictates the underlying structure . . . meticulously designed to be harmonious in proportion to the whole . . . and the narrative of each design is developed through the relationship between 'pattern element' and 'ground'. . . 'pattern element' being the subject matter, or symbolism . . . and 'ground' being the design environment, or composition . . .

from sketchbook concept to full scale design, all drawings are worked by hand . . . preferring the journey made through ink and paper to the one by computer and mouse . . . technology deserves it's rightful place in our lives and in our work, but "the further removed we get from our work, the further removed we get from ourselves" . . .

the designs are inspired by 'everything', and how 'everything shifts' as it relates to 'change' . . . the 'shift' of consciousness within a subject as it passes through time, space, environment and experience . . . the 'shift' of energy that happens with every encounter, transition or thought . . . and the 'shift' of knowledge through communication . . . the osmosis of enlightenment . . .

manufacture is carried out personally by lye at his studio, currently based in south wales UK.

the fabrication, like the design process is carried out with an approach that borders on an 'obsessive compulsion for accuracy' . . . prompting one client to remark "if NASA made Art . . . this is what it would look like". . .

using only the finest quality antique glass and traditional materials, the designs are faithfully and painstakingly transformed into windows . . . clients are invited to visit the studio during the manufacturing process, to gain a deeper understanding of the work they are commissioning . . . and to see the designs they have approved come to life . . .

all glazing concerns, including encapsulation (placing the stained glass window securely in a double glazed panel) and final installation can either be carried out by lye spectrum design, or by the clients favored contractor . . . these matters are discussed with the client at the beginning of the project, and will reflect in the commission fee . . .

lye has been a student of disciplines that range from ceramics, carpentry, metalwork, photography, technical drawing, fine art painting, graphic design, illustration and architectural stained glass . . . with this deep understanding of materials and their properties, alongside an acute sensitivity of appropriate design . . . this wealth of knowledge and experience is combined to create works in glass that echo with elements of all of these crafts . . . and will not be found anywhere else . . .

in glazing projects for commission, the preferable medium is traditional lead work, antique glass and painting . . . though other processes such as sandblasting, enameling and fusing are also available, and are employed where the project and client's budget dictates . . .

an ever changing range of objects are also created at lye spectrum design, using glass, metal, wood, plastic and stone . . . from unique and autonomous pieces of work for exhibition, to limited edition runs of a particular product for private collection . . . click 'objects' in side bar to view recent products . . .
